Icky Sticky Skittles
Beginning Reading
By: Katie Brown
Rationale: This lesson will teach children about the correspondence i=/i/. Students will learn to recognize spell, and read words containing the spelling i=/i/. They will learn meaningful representation of the word, they will spell and read words containing this spelling in a letterbox lesson, and read a decodable book that focuses on the correspondence i=/i/.
Materials: Image of lady wiping sticky things off of her hands, cover-up critter, letterboxes (one for modeling and one for each student), letter manipulates (magnetic letters for teacher and small regular manipulates for students), list of spelling words on a poster, magnetic board for the teacher, decodable text: Liz Is Six, computer or device for reading the book, and assessment worksheet. Letters needed: g,r,l,l,m,a,s,k,i,b,p,f,r,e,t,c,k
Procedure:
-
Say: In order to become expert readers, we need to learn the code that tells us how to pronounce words. We have already learned to read words like map, rap, hen, and wet that have short a and e in them. Today, we are going to learn to read words with icky, sticky i. Think about a time you had a lot of skittles and your hands got super sticky! (show image)
-
Say: Before we can read words, we need to be able to recognize what they sound like. Let’s see if you can find the icky sticky I sound in a tongue tickler. “I-i-i-zy l-i-i-i-cked the st-i-i-i-cky sk-i-i-i-ttles i-i-i-t made her hands i-i-i-cky” Can you hear how your mouth opens a little bit and your tongue goes to the bottom of your mouth?
-
Say: Let’s try listening for the icky sticky i in some words. Do you hear the i in rip or rat? Skin or lent? Slim or stock?
-
Say: Now that we have practiced listening to the words, how might we spell a worth with the icky sticky i in it? If I wanted to spell a word like drip I would begin by setting our four letterboxes. I would put the i in the third box to begin because that is where I hear the icky sticky i sound. Then, I hear d-d-r-r-, I think I hear a d and a r before the i, so I am going to put the d in the first box and the r in the second. D-d-d-r-r-r-i-i-i-p. I hear the p sound at the end of the word so I am going to put the letter p in the last box to complete the word drip. Let’s see if you can spell some words with the letterboxes. (grill, mask, blimp, fret, lick)-give sentences for each word.
-
Say: Let’s practice reading some words with icky sticky i in them. (get out poster with words on them). If I was going to read twist I would begin by locating my icky sticky i and looking at the letters before it. I see t-t- and w-w- to make t-t-w-w-i-i, after the i I see a s and a t. i-i-s-s-t-t. Finally I will put it all together t-t-w-w-i-i-s-s-t-t, twist! Now I want you to practice reading some words. (same as the letterbox lesson but in print). Have students read words all together, and give each student a word until everyone has had a turn.
-
Say: Y’all have done an awesome job reading and spelling these words! I believe it is time to read a book! The book is called Liz Iz Six. Liz turns six and gets a big mitt for her birthday. Her and her friends decide to play a baseball game. The pig is up to bat and he hits the ball, but Liz catches it in her mitt! Next up is Liz she gets a hit but can the pig catch it in his mitt? We will have to read the rest of the story to see what happens. (Split students in pairs to read the book, monitor the reading, after students have read the book, read the book as a class and talk about it)
-
Say: Wasn’t that a fun book to read? Now we have one more activity to do. I want each of you to complete this worksheet. Say the name of each picture. Circle the word that matches the picture. Lastly color pictures.
